Official summary

Customer may report that the transmission does not work correctly. Shortly after a cold start, the following message appears in the instrument cluster display: ?Gearbox Malfunction! Journey can be continued?. The gearbox is in limp mode until the key is cycled. The issue is very sporadic and cannot be reproduced with a test drive. DTC P17E1 (Gear positioner 2 mechanical malfunction) with DFCC 9473 is stored in the transmission control module, J743 (address word 02). The DFCC is the 4-6 digit code that is typically listed before the fault code. Software error in the transmission control module.

What a TSB means. Technical service bulletins are repair guidance manufacturers send to dealers — they are not recalls, and repairs are not automatically free (warranty extensions are an exception worth checking). The full document is available via NHTSA’s vehicle lookup.
